FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I get an SCU debit card or credit card?

An SCU debit card requires a State Credit Union checking account.  If you already have an SCU checking account but you carry only an ATM card, click here for a faxable Visa check debit card request form.  If you don't have a checking account, learn more about our accounts here. Learn more about SCU Visa credit cards or click here for a faxable application.

How many points do I earn for debit card purchases?

You earn points every time you use your card to make purchases from your checking account, whether you sign your name or enter a PIN. You'll earn more points when you sign your name.

Earn one point for every $2.50 you spend when you sign your name.

Earn one point for every $5.00 when you enter your PIN.

Plus, with a new SCU debit card, you earn 500 bonus rewards points the first time you use it for a purchase!

Where can I see my points / understand points on statements?

You can check on your points activity and balances in a number of ways.  Most importantly, you’ll always find the total points available for redemption at any given time at www.curewards.com.

For debit point activity, click on the Relationship Rewards link on the left menu within SCU Online. Then click View Debit. Choose the card number to view and you'll see recent activity with the estimated points earned. (These point values are based on the initial processing. Sometimes final processing will change the points awarded depending on whether you entered your PIN or signed your name for the transaction.) Debit points are applied to your account daily.

For debit point totals, look on your monthly checking account statement.  You will see the total points earned for activity from the 26th of the prior month through the 25th of the current month. You will also find Points Transferred In (bonus points or points transferred from a family member or friend), Transferred Out (to be combined with your credit card points or given to a family member or friend), Redeemed Points and Expired Points.

For debit point redemptions, visit www.curewards.com. Enter your debit card number to see the total points available for redemption at any given time.

For credit point activity and totals, refer to your credit card statement. Each purchase dollar earns 1 point. Adding your purchases (net of returned merchandise) and rounding down to the dollar will give your point total. Your statement shows Points Earned for the billing cycle, Points Redeemed and Points Available. Credit points are only applied to your account at the end of each billing cycle.

For credit point redemptions, visit www.curewards.com. Enter your credit card number to see the total points available for redemption.  This will be the total points earned on purchase transactions made with that credit card as of the last billing cycle, plus any points transferred in as of the prior day.

If you combine your points, your debit points will roll to your credit card. You can continue to see the estimated debit point activity through SCU Online as described above.  On your checking account statement, the total Points Earned will be Transferred Out, leaving you with a zero balance (unless you had an untransferred balance prior to combining your points).  On your credit card statement, the debit points will be shown as Transferred In and then will be added to your Points Available.

For combined point redemptions, visit www.curewards.com. Enter your credit card number to see the total points available for redemption.  This will be the total points earned on purchase transactions made with that credit card as of the last billing cycle, plus the points earned on purchase transactions made with the combined debit card as of the prior day, plus any bonus points or points transferred in as of the prior day.

On all debit and credit point transfers or combinations, remember to allow several days for processing.

How can I earn the most Relationship Rewards points?

Tip 1: Use your SCU Visa credit card for as many purchases as you comfortably can (and will) pay off each month. Your SCU credit card spending earns the most points.

Tip 2: With your SCU debit card, remember this phrase: “Sign for fine rewards.” You’ll earn the most points with your debit card when you sign your name for the purchase.  Just ask the salesperson to process your purchase as “credit.” It will still be deducted from your checking account.

Tip 3: Pay your normal monthly bills with your debit or credit card. Many merchants give you a credit card option for payment, either on the payment coupon or online.

Tip 4: Don’t carry cash or a checkbook!

How do I combine points?

If you have only a debit card, you don't need to combine points.  Your debit card transactions that are processed as "debit" [you enter a PIN] and transactions that are processed as "credit" [you sign your name] will be combined automatically under your debit card number.

However, when you have both debit and credit cards from SCU, you can combine your points from both cards so you can redeem for bigger and better prizes.

How do I transfer points?

You can even give your points to another cardholder, as often as once per quarter. So, if your child or family member needs a few more points for a big travel award, you can step in to help out.

Click here for a faxable form to make your request. Please allow up to four days for processing.  (Opens an Adobe PDF document in a new window.)

When will I receive 500 bonus points for using my new debit card?

It may take several weeks to apply the bonus points after the card is first used.  Depending on timing, this may mean your points do not show up on the first statement after using the card.  Reminder:  the 500 bonus points apply only for first use on a brand-new Visa check debit card, not a re-issued or replaced card.

Do my points expire?

Yes.  Points may exist on an account for four calendar years and then will expire on the last day of calendar year four.  For example, if points begin in 2008, that is considered year one.  Year two is 2009, year three is 2010 and year four is 2011.  Points from 2008 will expire on December 31, 2011.

Where can I find the complete rules to the program?
